Skater XL calls itself an " evolution in skateboarding games" but it feels more like an amalgamation, a combination of various mechanics and ideas without any sort of overarching theme other than " Hey, isn't skating fun?"

While some players preferred to lean into the faster, more arcade-like titles like OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood, others moved more towards realism and EA's Skate franchise. There's also Session, a skateboarding simulator which, just like Skater XL, is currently in Early Access on Steam.ĮA's Skate differed in many ways to the Tony Hawk series, and Skater XL definitely edges more into EA's concept of skateboarding than Activision's, although it doesn't lean quite as hard into the full realism simulation of Session.

Ever since the decline of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skaterfranchise, many people who enjoyed the mechanics, freedoms, and mentalities associated with skateboarding have been looking to find another suitable alternative.


The team behind Skater XL has done a good job of recreating Downtown Los Angeles, but the barren city streets provide little in the way of a sense of direction for players.
